2025 Honda Civic Type R Interior, Release Date, Horsepower These days, high-performance 2025 Honda Civic Type R automobiles are pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Speed and cutting-edge technology combine to produce absurd lap times and 60 mph sprints in under four seconds. Most high-end sports cars, such as the Chevrolet Corvette, Jaguar F-Type, and Porsche Cayman, aren’t practical for everyday driving and come with a hefty price tag to boot. If only you could get a two-door coupe with the performance of a five-door hatchback, all for an affordable price. What the hot hatch segment does is exactly that. After a few years, Honda has released its new Civic Type R model for the 2025 year-to-date model. It’s also the first time Honda is introducing it to the United States.

When it comes to its looks, the 2025 Honda Civic Type R is unmistakably loud. As long as it’s covered in Championship White, Rallye Red or Aegis Blue or Crystal Black, or my personal favorite, Polished Metal, the overemphasized bodywork can’t be missed. Aside from the big rear wing, the large air intakes on the front fascia, the hood scoop, and the carbon fiber aero parts around the bottom all scream attention to themselves on this car. The tri-pipe exhaust system, with its deafening howl, completes the package. It’s unlikely that Honda will see many VW Golf R conquest buyers swapping in their Type R, but for those who don’t mind getting stared at, the Type R is a wonderful fit.

With the Civic Type R, you don’t have to sacrifice everyday usability for increased performance. Except for the front seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, carbon fiber and red highlights, and a basic Civic’s cabin, the inside of the Civic Type R might easily be mistaken for any other. The Type R’s options are based on the Civic Touring, which is the most well-equipped version of the car, according to Honda. The Type R is the Civic lineup’s halo model, so this makes sense. Power-adjustable front seats and Honda Sensing’s suite of safety features are the only things missing from the Touring package, both of which were omitted to reduce weight.

There are various annoyances in Honda’s infotainment system. One of the most common complaints is the lack of physical volume control. However, the navigation system’s inability to always find its way around is also a major issue. The Garmin-based navigation system operated like a schizophrenic as I drove north toward Fort Worden State Park along the 101 along the Hood Canal, a Fjord connecting to Puget Sound. It’s a good thing Apple CarPlay and my phone-based navigation saved the day.

2025 Honda Civic Type R Engine

The Civic Type R’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is at its core. The 16-overhead-valve engine is powered by Honda’s VTEC system and fuelled by direct fuel injection. To get the engine up to speed quickly, the exhaust valves are filled with sodium, and the rotating assembly is made of lightweight aluminum.

That hood scoop directs air under the engine for cooling and to reduce under-hood lift thanks to a dedicated airflow tunnel under the car. The underside of the pistons is oil jets that help with cooling as well as lubrication. There is even a water-cooled exhaust manifold. Honda is committed to making this engine last as long as possible. After the dual mufflers and the middle resonator, the exhaust was finished off with their exhaust exits.

Despite being the most powerful hot-hatch, the Civic Type R isn’t the most efficient. When the engine is turned to 6,500 revolutions per minute, it puts out 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. In comparison, the Ford Focus RS produces 350 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. However, the Type R is well-equipped to take on the likes of the Volkswagen Golf R and Subaru WRX. Golf R has 292 horsepower, but Subaru Impreza has 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque, which is nearly dead. Even yet, the Type R is now the most powerful vehicle in its class after Ford was eliminated as an anomaly.

It comes with a 7.0-inch infotainment system, which includes navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, as well as a 540-Watt sound system with 12 speakers. Aside from dealer-installed equipment, the Type R lacks any additional options or enhancements from Honda. The base price is $33,900, plus an additional $875 for destination fees. As a result, the final cost is $34,775.
